The cultural perspective considers culture to be one of the most important environmental factors in shaping personality. It explores how both universal and culture-specific elements contribute to personality development and diversity, questioning the universal applicability of theories developed in a single cultural context, such as the West.

Cultural Perspective in Personality

Selective migration is the concept that people tend to move to places that are compatible with their personalities and needs. This phenomenon serves as one explanation for regional personality differences. For example, an individual high in agreeableness might prefer to live near family and friends, whereas a person high in openness might be drawn to a location recognized for being diverse and innovative, such as California.

Selective Migration

To understand the interplay between culture and personality, researchers use three primary methods: the cultural-comparative approach, the indigenous approach, and the combined approach. Each offers a unique perspective on how personality is understood across different cultural settings.

Approaches to Studying Personality in a Cultural Context

A significant limitation in personality psychology is that theories and assessments developed in Western societies may not be universally applicable. Cultural context is crucial, as concepts valid in one culture might not apply to others. For instance, studies have shown that the Eysenck Personality Inventory yields relevant results in a collectivist culture like Papua New Guinea only when analyzed within that specific cultural context. Similarly, personality assessments for groups like Native Americans can be biased if they don't account for culture-specific responses and tribal frames of reference, requiring assessors to have deep cultural knowledge to ensure accuracy.

Limitations of Western-Centric Personality Theories

Research has identified variations in the average levels of the Big Five personality traits across different cultural groups. For example, individuals in collectivist Asian cultures tend to exhibit lower levels of extroversion. In contrast, people in Central and South American cultures often score higher on openness to experience, while Europeans tend to score higher on neuroticism.

Cultural Differences in the Big Five Personality Traits

Cultural values significantly shape personality. Research indicates that individuals from individualist cultures tend to develop more personally-oriented personality traits, reflecting values like independence and self-achievement. Conversely, those from collectivist cultures often exhibit more socially-oriented personality traits, which align with cultural values such as group harmony and interdependence.

Influence of Cultural Values on Personality Traits

Research by Rentfrow et al. (2013) analyzing responses from over 1.5 million individuals identifies three distinct regional personality clusters within the United States. Cluster 1, located primarily in the center of the country (including the Upper Midwest and Deep South), is characterized by people who tend to be friendly and conventional. Cluster 2, occurring mainly on the west side of the country, is dominated by individuals who are more relaxed, emotionally stable, calm, and creative. Cluster 3, which includes the Northeast region and Texas, has a higher proportion of people who are stressed, irritable, depressed, temperamental, and uninhibited. These regional boundaries are generalizations, as several states are comprised of a combination of two different clusters. Furthermore, residents in Clusters 2 and 3 generally exhibit higher levels of openness.

Regional Personality Clusters in the United States

A comprehensive study of personality and culture involves three core learning objectives:
1. Taking a personality assessment (e.g., the Big Five Personality test) to identify personal traits.
2. Discussing personality differences across individualist and collectivist cultures.
3. Discussing the three primary approaches to studying personality in a cultural context (cultural-comparative, indigenous, and combined).
