Types of Criteria for Linking Knowledge Entities

Online communities that organize step-guided learning content emphasize links among knowledge entities because these links expose prerequisites, learning sequences, and possible follow-up content, helping learners follow pathways toward specific learning objectives.

Step-Guided Learning Communities Emphasize Knowledge-Entity Links

Making words or phrases as anchors, prominent in a knowledge entity to link to another knowledge entity.

Solutions to disconnected knowledge entities

Displaying how concepts within or between fields are related can demonstrate how concepts are used within and across fields. For example, a reader can follow how a concept is used in two or more fields. A taxonomy, which is limited, to hierarichal relationships could limit confusion caused by lateral or RT links across subjects.

Taxonomy of Concepts

Displaying links between concepts helps readers understand their relationships and the topical structure of a domain. Without explicit links, readers of linear text must mentally construct these relationships across distant sentences and paragraphs, which is cognitively demanding and prone to misinterpretation.

Linking topically related concepts

Indexes can state the relationship between concepts and can be structured in a variety of ways. Indexes do not typically display direct links between concepts; instead, they are usually lists that use annotations (such as the marks BT, NT, and RT) to denote the type of relationship between listed concepts, rather than showing the links themselves.

Displaying indexes of concepts

Organizing and categorizing pieces of information or knowledge entities (such as concepts, theories, or ideas) in a structured and systematic way. This process typically involves creating an index, which is essentially a searchable database of information that is organized according to specific criteria (such as subject, author, date, or relevance). By using indexes to catalog knowledge entities, it becomes easier to find and retrieve relevant information quickly, as well as to identify connections and relationships between different pieces of knowledge. This can be particularly useful for individuals or organizations that deal with large volumes of information, such as libraries, research institutions, or businesses, as it allows them to manage their knowledge more effectively and efficiently.

Using Indexes to Catalog Knowledge entities

Citing sources connects disconnected knowledge entities by acknowledging the origin of information used in a work. This practice includes providing in-text citations and a reference list, which gives readers a mechanism to locate sources and evaluate their credibility. Furthermore, citation establishes a chain of understanding by linking presented arguments to prior developments in a discipline.

Citing References to Connect Knowledge Entities

Using a search engine to find information related to a topic by entering keywords or phrases. The search engine ranks returned pages, articles, and other content by relevance, content quality, and site authority, letting users discover knowledge entities that were not explicitly linked to their starting point. Advanced search features, such as filtering by date or restricting the search to a specific site, help narrow results further. As a solution to disconnected knowledge entities, this method relies on the searcher's own query formulation rather than on links, indexes, or citations built into the content itself.
