Hormonal Influences on Mental Health
Many factors are commonly used to assess mental health, including health-based criteria, an individual's level of functioning, and self-reported symptoms. However, research on mental health—particularly mood-based disorders—often neglects the influence of the menstrual cycle and other bodily hormones on mood and overall wellness. The menstrual cycle is frequently excluded from mood-disorder research because its natural fluctuations introduce variability that complicates results. Accounting for the menstrual cycle and its hormonal effects on mood and physicality can provide a more complete understanding of the relationship between the mind and the body.
