To conduct a literature review, students must spend a lot of time searching and combing through papers to find what is relevant and accurate. It may involve a reproducible and transparent method for mapping the findings

Literature Review stage 1: A Structured Search (Smallbone 2011)

Teaching students to synthesize the literature into a meaningful review. This step casts previously done research in a new light based on the context/connections between literature summarized and on the students' interpretation

Teaching literature Review stage 3: Reconstruction and Synthesis (Smallbone 2011)

After collecting enough viable literature, students must "digest the content" to decide how much to include, what to include and its importance. A major part of learning this is developing skills of appraisal and critique - which constitutes understanding papers as arguments not facts

Teaching literature Review stage 2: Deconstruction (Smallbone 2011)

1. A structured search
2. Deconstruction
3. Reconstruction and synthesis

A three-stage framework for teaching literature reviews: A new approach

- an effective approach for integrating students into research
- there is a demand for literature reviews (generalized from sustainability research)
- they open the doors of academia to students - a valuable networking and work experience
