Emotions are formed by a combination of four elements: a subjective experience, an expression, a cognitive appraisal, and physiological responses. The exact sequence in which these components occur is not definitively known, and they can sometimes happen simultaneously.

Components of Emotion

Which of the following are components of emotion?

Which of the following best describes the role of psychological appraisal in the components of emotion?

Which component of emotion is responsible for the physical changes in the body, such as increased heart rate and sweating, during an emotional response?

The subjective experience is the personal, individual stimulus that initiates an emotion. While this stimulus is often an external event, it can also be internal. For instance, a person might feel sadness simply by thinking about a tragic event like a war, even without having directly experienced it.

Subjective Experience in Emotion

As a component of emotion, cognitive appraisal is the process through which an individual evaluates a situation to determine how it will personally affect them.

Cognitive Appraisal in Emotion

Emotions involve physiological responses, which are physical changes within the body. Examples of these responses include alterations in heart rate or an increase in sweating.

Physiological Responses in Emotion

Emotional expression involves conveying emotional states through various channels, not limited to facial displays. Other significant forms of expression include vocal tone, body language—which involves posture and movement—and other general behaviors.

Emotional Expression

An individual's unique emotional experience is shaped by their personal background, culture, and past experiences. Consequently, two people can have distinct emotional reactions even when encountering the same situation.

Individual Differences in Emotional Experience

Theories of emotion are frameworks developed to explain how the various components of emotion, such as physiological arousal, psychological appraisal, and subjective experience, interact with one another to produce an emotional state.
