The Disability Studies community explores research that works to broaden our understanding of disability as a social category, the experiences of disabled people living under systems of ableism, and research that centers the lived experiences and self-reflective theoretical contributions of disabled people regarding disability. Disability Studies is an interdisciplinary field including disability history, disability culture, disability legislation, and more. Interns have explored a variety of areas including, but not limited to, specific disabilities (such as fibromyalgia), the representation of disability in media, intersectionality, disability bias in AI, barriers to accessibility, and how different cultures impact special education globally. Interns would be free to research topics that interest them as long as they relate to disability studies. Interns summarize research articles and present their findings weekly with the rest of the group. By using the 1Cademy online network, interns synthesize articles into smaller ideas, connect them to broader concepts both within the disability studies community and other communities on the platform, extrapolate the research for deeper analysis, and communicate their findings to other community members. We value collaborative learning and expect interns to participate in group discussions and leverage collective knowledge to dive deeper into the content.
